Great illustrations and story. My daughter has loved this book since she was 2.5 years old but she is into dark stuff. There are goblin characters and lots of dark stuff going on. We love it, but might not be for all young kids.Tags : Maddy Kettle Book 1: The Adventure of the Thimblewitch [Eric Orchard] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <div> Maddy Kettle</i>... looks fantastic: every panel exudes quirky, gorgeous atmosphere. ” <b>- NPR</i></b> Eleven-year-old Maddy loved working in her parents' bookstore... especially when joined by her pet flying toad Ralph. Maddy Kettle Book 1 The Adventure of the Thimblewitch Eric Orchard 9781603090728 Books Reviews
In descending order this is a book of drawings, then plot, then character and dialogue. The drawings are spare and slightly surreal, but expressive and inviting.
We follow Maddy as she tries to rescue her parents, who have been transformed into kangaroo rats by the Thimblewitch. She must find the Thimblewitch and then confront the evil Spider Goblins. Maddy meets and befriends a number of engaging, amiable, mysterious and/or threatening characters, all of whom aid her in one way or another. In some sense this is an Oz adventure, although Maddy has a bit more spunk and vinegar and the stakes for her are higher.
But the story is just a framework upon which to hang the illustrations. From Maddy's home, to her trek through the wilderness, to her flight through the skies, and then in the Thimblewitch's castle and the Spider Goblin's redoubt, we find ourselves in fantastic and compelling, albeit dreamlike, territory.
I was struck repeatedly by how similar this book's effect is to early stop-motion filmmaking by such masters as Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay, who placed doll parts, found objects, and organic and inorganic materials, (often disassembled and then reassembled into antic shapes), in dark and moody environments, to tell dream like and non-linear stories. This book isn't quite so dark or surreal, and the story is more coherent, but the sense of everything having been assembled from parts of other things is similar.
There isn't any violence as such, but even though the surprises all turn out to be happy ones there is still an element of suspense and menace, (again, like the movie "Wizard of Oz", which has its share of scary bits.) So, maybe this isn't a bedtime read.
The result is that the book is triumphant as a work of art, entrancing as a children's book, and captivating as an adventure story. What a nice find.
Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

With her parents turned into Kangaroo Rats Maddie is off the save them by finding a cure for the spell. Making her way past scarecrows, Spider Goblins. As she scours for the cure she makes many new friends.
Eric Orchard, a talented cartoonist, has written and drawn a colorful, eye drawing graphic novel that will draw readers into this delightful story.
My rating of "Maddie Kettle - The Adventure of the Thimblewitch" is 4 out of 5 stars.
Maddy Kettle is an 11 year-old on a mission. Her parents have been turned into kangaroo rats by the Thimblewitch, so she sets out with her pet space toad, Ralph, to find the witch and get her to restore them. She will have to evade goblin spiders and scarecrow soldiers, and she’ll meet a bear and raccoon team of cloud cartographers who map the skies as she sets out on her journey.
This story is a great illustration of people’s perceptions, and how they can be so very wrong. It’s a great story for parents and kids to read together, and one that teachers should be using in the classroom, accompanied by a discussion on perception versus reality, and how we judge people by those perceptions.
Without getting too far into spoilery territory, Maddy learns that her thinking needs some adjustment as she meets these “bad” characters and learns what the real story is behind the bits and pieces she knows. She grows as a person, and heads off into new adventures – adventures, I hope, that will teach us new lessons as she goes on.
There is some great art in here; kids and adults alike will be drawn into the story by the retro-futuristic artwork and the quick pacing and resolution. It’s an all-around great intro to a new series that gives kids another positive female role model, who’s also a relatable kid (Zita the Spacegirl fans, are you with me?).
Fun Book!
Delivery seemed slow, but it was worth waiting for. Awaiting the sequel.
Great Book The girls both read through it and keep it by their bed.
10 and 7 year old really enjoyed this book. My 10-year-old asked if there are more in the series which is a great indicator of how much she enjoyed it.
